About AIBE

Understanding the national-level certification for advocates in India.

What is AIBE?

The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is a national-level certification examination conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) for law graduates who want to practice as advocates in India.

After passing AIBE, an advocate receives the Certificate of Practice (COP), which is a mandatory requirement for long-term court practice.

Mandatory Requirement

Without clearing AIBE, a law graduate enrolled with a State Bar Council cannot permanently practice law independently in courts. Practice rights remain restricted under BCI rules for those who haven't passed the exam.

Purpose of AIBE

The examination acts as a gateway to ensure that newly enrolled advocates possess the necessary skills to represent clients effectively. It checks whether an advocate has:

Basic legal knowledge
Understanding of court procedure
Professional ethics
Practical advocacy awareness

Importance of AIBE

  • Full Practice Rights: Allows you to practice law in any court across India independently.
  • Professional Credibility: Passing a national-level benchmark strengthens your standing in the legal community.
  • Career Growth: Many corporate and government legal positions require a valid COP.
